Breeding for PVY resistance in tobacco LJ911 using CRISPR/Cas9 technology

Abstract Potato virus Y (PVY) is one of the main diseases tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). Recent studies indicated that Va gene (Ntab0942120) determines susceptibility crop to PVY, and product interacts with PVY genome-linked protein (VPg) initiate genome translation process, which ultimately leads systemic infection by virus. In this research, cultivar LJ911 was used as receptor material for editing. Gene knocked out through CRISPR/Cas9 technology, transgene-free homozygous edited plants in T1 generation were established. Pathology tests had gained resistance. Therefore, materials generated study represent potentially useful genetic resources breeding PVY- resistant tobacco.
